Facebook of Mitochondria
This year I took Advanced Biology which I really enjoyed. It was a blast from the past from Living Environment that I took freshman year. During this unit, we were learning about the different organelles living in our bodies and their functions. At the beginning of this project, our teacher made us take a quiz about what kind of person we are. It turned out that I was social. So in order to start this project, he made us think of ways to do this project based on what kind of person we are. I chose to do a Facebook page about the Mitochondria. I was very creative while making this project. I had to make sure I included every cell that was involved with the mitochondria and make them have a conversation. Secondly, I had to point out the functions and different processes the mitochondria goes through. This was such a fun project and I even learned more about the cell while doing it.
Slave Narrative Repurposing
Oh boy. American Conflict was one interesting class. For this unit, we were learning how to re-purpose different ways of literature (narratives, art, films). This was a very difficult task because we had to craft a 1-page excerpt from a modern-day narrative addressing one of the causes of sectionalism today using the voice reflected in the slave narrative I studied. We had to consider all of the following questions when writing: How did your author use ethos, pathos, and logos in his/her narrative? What was the perspective of the slave, and how would that influence his/her stance on a modern issue of sectionalism? How would the slave be impacted by the perspective of those around him today?
I chose the slave narrative of Solomon Northrop (12 Years a Slave) and re-purposed it to the case of Trayvon Martin. Although this was a hard assignment, I did very well on it. I got 8s, 9s, and 10s. This class a huge struggle for me and I was very proud of myself for accomplishing something that I'm not very good at.
Forbes Essay
This essay was very interesting to do. One of our starting units in American Capitalism was learning about different industries and people who were involved with them. I decided to write about the automobile industry, Henry Ford, and how the automobile industry is functioning today. I did very well with this project. I mostly got 9.5s and 10s.
Reflection
It's been a crazy four years here at Frank McCourt. I have met such wonderful people and amazing teachers. I could have not imagined myself at any other high school. This community means so much to me and I'm so thankful to be a part of it. I have improved tremendously academically and socially and it's all because of this school. Although this school is VERY different from other high schools, I'm so grateful to be apart of this unique school who has prepared me for college as much as possible. I enjoyed every moment here at FMHS and I cannot to make some new memories in college.
